Agenda / Notes

1.  Welcome and Introductions (Ellen Powell)

2.  Review May Minutes (Heather Santiago, Meghan Bradley)
Meeting minutes for both the May PTO meeting and August Board Meeting are available on the Woodbrook PTO website.

3. Board election for vacant PTO President seat
Ellen Powell and Kerri Kerkeide elected as co-presidents.
Reference Woodbrook PTO Board and Chairs Document for full list of board members and contact information.

4. Communications Report (Jen Smith)
PTO newsletter will be distributed monthly in student folders. The current thinking is that it will contain a list of PTO events for the month, highlight an event from the previous month and plug an upcoming event and/or volunteer opportunities.  See the website for more frequent/rolling updates and chances to volunteer. Contact Jen if you have information that you would like to include to either newsletter or the website.   Amy Barbour will be overseeing PTO facebook presence.

Staff favorites binder is getting updated and will uploaded to the PTO website once complete.

  1. Bond Referendum (Kate Acuff, Albemarle School Board Chair)
On November 8, voters will be asked whether or not they support the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors proposal to finance a bundle of school projects to ease overcrowding and modernize facilities. The bond referendum will capture community sentiment and if approved, allow the county to borrow at a lower interest rate.

School Project Bundle included in Referendum:

    A. Woodbrook Expansion and Modernization
    40,000 sq. ft addition
Additional students, bringing census to 600
    New gym
    Expanded cafeteria
    Maker space
    Music performance center

    B. Western Albemarle Studies Academy and Modernization

    C. Modernization of all county schools, (Except for Red Hill where modernization is currently underway)

    D. Security improvements for all county schools

Referendum has a $37.05/year tax implication for median priced home owner

  2. Review of Proposed PTO Calendar and PTO Coordinator Needs
See calendar for proposed events.  Volunteers needed to lead select events such as teacher luncheons and movie nights.  Please consider volunteering.  Without support, these events will not occur.

Email Ellen Powell and Kerri Kerkeide if you are interested and watch the PTO website for volunteer requests.

    Calendar approved with amendments.

    7. Presentation on Musician/Artist (Lindsay Diamond)
Motion carried to provide $600 in funds to Pacifique Niyonsenga, a Rwandan musician and artist who will be performing at Woodbrook on Friday, September 23, at 9:30am and leading workshops.

    8. Budget Review and Approval (Maureen Boisvert)
Budget approved.  Note that it is a working document and funding decisions can be modified throughout the year.  Reminder to link Kroger, Harris Teeter and Amazon Smile accounts to Woodbrook.  Ask friends and family to do the same.

    9.  Proposal and Discussion on Direct Appeal “Feed the Bear” (Kerri Kerkeide)
Catalog sales this year have been replaced with direct appeal campaign. Look for a note in October asking for donations to “feed the bear” and meet fundraising goal to support Woodbrook PTO.

    10.  Principal’s Report  (Lisa Molinaro)
Thanked PTO for their support.  Encouraged families to ask questions about bond referendum.  The addition is possible with or without the referendum in November.  If approved, the construction will be a shorter, more efficient process.  Students deserve modernized facility and best learning environment possible.

    11. Announcements
Don’t forget Chick-Fil-A Spirit Night on Monday, September 19

Next PTO Meeting: October 11, 6:30pm in Library
